“According to a recent NCMEC study in patterns and trends in online child victimization, the past few years have seen a 6% increase in reports of kids providing images and videos of themselves when asked by online acquaintances; sending naked photos of themselves through text messages (“sexting”); and cyber-bullying. This new trend underscores the need to educate our younger users, their families and teachers on ways to create and enjoy safe online experiences.

We’re doing our part by working with child safety organizations and law enforcement around the globe to spread positive messages about life online. For example, in mid-September, we’re launching a global training program on YouTube to help teens teach other teens about these issues. This is just one step among many that we’re taking to help create a generation of responsible digital citizens.”

So says a post on the official Google blog today. Can’t wait to see what Goog has planned for its geeklings.

Texas City juvenile court referee Associate Judge Kathryn Lanan expects all juveniles under her court’s jurisdiction to become her “friend” on Facebook or MySpace. She also expects all juvenile offenders that appear in her court to post only “age appropriate” material on their online social networking pages as part of the terms of their probation.

“About 85 percent of the 250 juveniles who come under her jurisdiction each year post on social networking sites, typically MySpace, Lanan says. When she is online at work and at home she follows their posts. And when a child appears in her court, she and her court reporter make sure they have a copy of what has most recently appeared on the child’s page. Some of the most disturbing posts she has encountered included an alleged offender bragging about “jumping a kid” — beating him up — as part of a gang initiation.”

Arthur Bright, a second-year law student at the Boston University School of Law, today suggested her friending requirements would become “somewhat Big Brotherly, were her approach to be more widely adopted.”

I don’t know. I have to wonder whether it’s a smart move. One, we’ve all been known to complain about the gap between the Internet and the law – and this just may be the beginning of that bridge. And two, given the recent Skanks in NY debacle, maybe it’s time we started considering the Internet as just another dimension to our social lives; a place where there is room for both anonymity and privacy walls, as well as a place where we are responsible for our actions.
